A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Caen, France by TravelPod blogger Exploreamerica titled "Normandy's D-Day invasion". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Exploreamerica's travel blog entry: "We began with a visit to Le Memorial de Caen Museum. The museum told the story of D-Day as well as the importance to learn from the past to have a peaceful future. Next we traveled to the coast of Normandy to see the location of the famous D-Day landings. We visited the American Cemetery with views of Omaha Beach. The cemetery has 9387 markers representing the American soldiers that died during the D-Day invasion. During the D Day invasion there were more than 5000 ships, 13000 aircraft, and 160000 troops. By the end of June 6, 1944, America had its first real foothold on the European continent. This was the largest amphibious invasion in history. In the evening we left France aboard a ferry headed to England. Once we boarded the ferry we were able to turn our watches back one hour. We gave the students an hour to explore the boat before their curfew. After that I stayed up a little later with some of the leaders. In the bar we met a group of men and women who had just got back from fighting in Afghanistan." Read and see more at: www.travelpod.com Photos from this trip: 1. "Beaches of Normandy" 2. "Ferry" 3.
